Job Description

Healthcare Research Editor-Writer

The Healthcare Research Editor-Writer researches, writes, and edits materials such as research reports, government or commercial research proposals, and healthcare journal manuscripts. The editor-writer supports multiple researchers and projects across the business.


  • Perform substantive and technical editing of documents written by IBM Watson Health researchers, consultants, and contractors

  • Craft crisp, targeted, strategically driven, engaging, and accurate copy for various audiences and on various healthcare topics

  • Adhere to corporate and client research standards to ensure data consistency and compliant documents

  • Draft manuscripts, literature reviews, reports, and sections of proposals with support from literature, an outline, or results from statistical analyses

  • Apply style and formatting guidelines (e.g., Government Printing Office Style Manual, Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, American Medical Association Manual of Style) as appropriate for the document

  • Use available research tools effectively (e.g., PubMed)

  • Edit and format complex tables and figures

  • Create and format documents that meet Section 508 requirements

  • Translate complex technical and scientific concepts into plain English

  • Support the business development team by managing and updating critical proposal collateral

  • Ensure client satisfaction by anticipating client needs and meeting deliverable deadlines

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 5+ years of recent editorial research experience as well as editing and writing complex research reports, journal manuscripts, and other research publications required

  • A keen eye for detail

  • Strong editing, writing, analytic, and time-management skills

  • Ability to convey complex, technical information to wide range of audiences

  • Ability to think strategically about communication issues

  • Understanding of U.S. health policy issues and research methods

  • Mastery of at least one of the following publication style guides - Government Printing Office Style Manual, Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, American Medical Association Manual of Style

  • Ability to use advanced functions to format Microsoft® Word documents

  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • Experience working with Department of Health & Human Services agencies or subject matter expertise in health policy or health care

  • Knowledge of federal government contracts including Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Scope of Work, and business requirements

  • Interest in preparing federal proposals including collecting and evaluating requirement inputs, as well as ensuring that all requirements are proposed appropriately and are compliant with the RFP
