IBM Senior Interaction UX Designer in Bethesda, Maryland

Job Description

Join the IBM Hybrid Cloud Design team, a well-established team, in designing integrated services for the IBM Cloud and other Fortune 500 on-prem enterprise software offering. We are looking for an experienced User Experience (UX) Design Leader with a proven record of working across a large portfolio of software products and leading a talented design team in delivering iconic user experiences. The best candidate will have several years of experience building and leading a team of designers to collaborate effectively with Offering Management and engineering in agile and lean delivery methodologies to deliver critical solutions and offerings our customers enjoy using. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated examples of leading and influencing knowledgeable product managers and astute technical architects in focusing on user problems and challenges when determining product priorities. The best candidate will have several years of practice in design with expertise in user interaction; design methodologies and tools; and customer testing. The candidate must demonstrate leadership, technical curiosity, and tenacity to partner with some of the leading technologists in the field of cognitive computing. They must be driven to use their abilities to set the direction for the next generation of mobile, large-scale web applications.


  • Review and critique the UX designs of assigned products in the IBM Hybrid Cloud portfolio and ensure rich design quality (great interaction, supreme visual styling, consistent and appropriate use of voice and tone, etc)

  • Work with UX designers, researchers and product managers to understand user’s needs and behaviors for the industries in which they work

  • Participate in and lead lean UX activities (in person and remote) in an Agile environment such as user/design research, interviews and workshops

  • Analyze and synthesize the findings; distilling the inherent complexity in the user’s experiences and identify the right problems to solve

  • Translate findings into usable, useful, effective and efficient user experiences

  • Clearly and quickly deliver ideas to cross-functional teams

  • Provide information verbally and visually through low and mid-fidelity renderings (starting with paper and pencil/whiteboard) and clickable prototypes

  • Test and validate working hypothesis with users through usability testing of wireframes, clickable prototypes and published product, and participate in design critique

  • Defend design choices using previous user research and usability standards

  • Work with Visual Designers and Developers to bring concepts to life while maintaining UX best practices

  • Contribute to the growth and development of design employees while inspiring them to research, envision and design highly coveted products by our customers

  • Able to focus on design detail and ascertain user value and impact as part of their software experience.

  • Proven knowledge and experience in Cloud Platforms, Cloud Services, Virtual Environments and APIs

  • Creative, curious, questioning, open to take and provide critique and have a ton of initiative

  • Experience solving complex design problems for Web interactions or software solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to translate research findings into complex interaction designs that provide usable, effective and efficient experiences to users

  • Demonstrated ability to produce and enhance low-fidelity sketches and medium fidelity wireframes to facilitate communication of recommended solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on interactive prototypes

  • Demonstrated ability to tell a meaningful story about the user and great presentation skills

  • Written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate alternative approaches

Required work location: Austin, TX or Research Triangle Park, NC

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 7 years of experience solving complex user problems

  • Understanding of Design principles and their application

  • At least 2 years of experience in working in a broad portfolio of related products and/or constitute a complex solution

  • Examples of beginning and ending interactions (micro interactions) and/or mobile/responsive design

  • Portfolio and work samples including user-centered design skills including visualizations of complex experiences such as flows, scenarios, personas, etc. (any fidelity), sketches to mid-fidelity interactions (show your process) and clickable prototypes (any fidelity)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in User Experience Design, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Science or related discipline.

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • 3 years Leading Design Teams in large enterprise environments supporting enterprise software deliverables.

  • Experience designing for accessibility

  • Data visualization skills

  • Data analysis and statistical analysis experience

  • Masters in User Experience Design, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Science or related discipline.
