IBM Postdoctoral Researcher in YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, New York

The Data Science Group in IBM Research uses data analytics, machine learning and AI, to deliver innovative solutions for social good and industry. We are looking for a User Experience Post Doc, with data visualization and visual design and storytelling skills, to help us explore intuitive and compelling user experiences.A successful candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team and be expected to split their time contributing to a number of projects. Tasks and responsibilities will range from understanding user requirements, designing interaction and flows for user interfaces and demos and creating mockups and wire frames (low and high fidelity) for implementation by software engineers and designing data visualizations. The focus is on user experience design, but skill in visual design are highly desired.The candidate must be a self-starter, able to take initiative and creative in their thinking about design issues. Strong communication and documentation skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people (problem owners and subject matter experts, researchers, developers, etc.) is required.Responsibilities:

  • Participate in and lead lean UX activities (in person and remote) in an Agile environment such as user/design research, interviews and workshops

  • Analyze and synthesize the findings; distilling the inherent complexity in the user’s experiences and identify the right problems to solve

  • Translate findings into usable, useful, effective and efficient user experiences

  • Clearly and quickly deliver ideas to cross-functional teams

  • Provide information verbally and visually through low and mid-fidelity renderings (starting with paper and pencil/whiteboard) and clickable prototypes

  • Test and validate working hypothesis with users through usability testing of wireframes, clickable prototypes and published product, and participate in design critique

  • Work with Developers to bring concepts to life while maintaining UX best practices

  • Deliver, review and critique the UX Designs of a multi-skilled design team to ensure effective and rich designs (great interaction, supreme visual styling, consistent and appropriate use of voice and tone, etc)

  • Work with UX Designers, researchers and product managers to understand user’s needs and behaviors for the industries in which they work.

  • Able to focus on design detail and ascertain user value and impact as part of their software experience

  • Experience solving complex design problems for Web interactions/software solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to translate research findings into interaction designs that provide usable, effective and efficient experiences to users

  • Demonstrated ability to produce and enhance low-fidelity sketches and medium fidelity wireframes to facilitate communication of recommended solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to create interactive prototypes, tell a meaningful story about the user and great presentation skills

  • Portfolio and work samples including user-centered design skills including visualizations of complex experiences such as flows,scenarios,personas etc.(any fidelity),sketches to mid-fidelity interactions (show your process) and clickable prototypes(any fidelity)

  • Examples of beginning and ending interactions (micro interactions) and/or mobile/responsive design considerations
