By making connections that may not have been previously considered, Watson can generate new insights that expedite the process of matching subjects to clinical trials and keep patient safe from the adverse effects of drugs.We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced User Experience and Visual Designer on our Watson for Patient Safety team responsible for the user experience, data visualization and visual design. Our environment is ever changing and requires a candidate who is flexible, thrives in ambiguity and can effectively collaborate across cross-functional groups and locations. Although User Experience Design will be your primary role, we’re looking for candidates with secondary skill in Complex Data Visualization or Visual Design. Responsibilities include:

  • Visualize and designs necessary to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas to the larger team (wireframes, clickable prototypes, detailed annotations, etc.) Finesse designs at a napkin, vector, and pixel level.

  • Work with designers, researchers, product managers and developers to understand and communicate user’s needs and behaviors to inform and shape product strategy/roadmap and create design deliverables for each release/sprint.

  • Use critical thinking to form design strategies that achieve product goals.

  • Creating clean and approachable data visualizations to illustrate complex analytics, trends, and data relationships

  • Deliver, review and critique the designs of a multi-skilled design team to ensure effective and rich designs (great interaction, supreme visual styling, consistent and appropriate use of voice and tone, etc)

  • Build a cross-functional team culture of transparent collaboration that results in clearly and quickly deliver ideas for feedback and iteration.

Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to produce quick, low-fidelity sketches and sleek, high fidelity visuals on tight schedules with a ton of iterations

  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize real user feedback into designs

  • Ability to work with brand and design guidelines

  • Knowledge of accessible designs

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including techniques to persuade and negotiate and the ability to articulate alternative approaches

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • Interpret people’s needs, present design concepts, and effectively communicate.

  • Create technical drawings for presentations and user interface specifications.

  • Understand limitations of web technologies including: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.

Position may be located in the following:Austin, TX or Cambridge, MA

  • Bachelor’s Degree in User Experience Design, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Science or related discipline.

  • 7 years experience solving complex user problems

  • Portfolio and work samples including user-centered design skills including visualizations of complex experiences such as flows, scenarios, personas, etc. (any fidelity), sketches to mid-fidelity interactions (show your process) and clickable prototypes (any fidelity)

  • Understanding of Design principles and their application

  • Experience designing for accessibility

  • Experience working on complex products with multiple user groups

  • Examples of beginning and ending interactions (micro interactions) and/or mobile/responsive design considerations

  • Data analysis and statistical analysis experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in Agile, Scrum and Lean
