Job Description The Development Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of our analytics offerings to our customers. This is a key leadership role as this person will hire and develop the team, put effective development processes in place and choose the right tools to support the delivery of new offerings to our customers and markets. The Development Manager will lead a team of data architects, business analysts, business intelligence and cognitive developers and testers. The role requires involvement across the full product development lifecycle from requirements specification, design, delivery, test, documentation, release management to support and maintenance. The Development Manager plays a key role in ensuring client satisfaction by overseeing delivery of offerings, and managing external relationships. The role requires interfacing with other teams within Product Development, customers, and other IBM groups such as Pre-Sales, Offering Management and Services. The position is very hands-on and suits somebody who is looking to demonstrate and build a broad range of skills. There is no "typical day" here, but on any given day, the Development Manager may be involved in:

  • Defining the team structure and hiring and growing the team to support this

  • Influencing, agreeing and documenting goals for the development team

  • Day-to-day management of large, complex projects as well as short term customer issues and escalations

  • Producing (or guiding others to produce) development plans, including high level estimates, resourcing requirements, risk and issue logs

  • Reporting on status on a variety of levels for a variety of audiences

  • Coordinating with Product Managers, Architects and other functional leads to investigate issues and deliver solutions

  • Implementing and coaching others on good development practice - including agile - and influencing the wider team

  • Drawing on a wide network of contacts to pull together the relevant stakeholders for regular and ad-hoc meetings

  • Briefing external groups on progress and plans

  • Suggesting and driving through process and product innovations

  • Managing, motivating and coaching team members

Skills and Attributes

  • Graduate with a third level degree in a business, computer or engineering related discipline

  • Experience of Analytics development an advantage

  • Excellent track-record in managing large and/or risky software development projects

  • Experience managing multiple development teams in an agile environment

  • Excellent communication, analytical and interpersonal skills with a track record of building relationships within a team, department, organization, with customers and partners

  • Experience of managing, motivating, developing / coaching and appraising resources assigned to the project

  • Solid, proven commitment to ensuring delivery of best of class software

  • Keen interest and experience in developing and improving process

  • Excellent leadership and influencing skills

  • Experience of working with offshore teams is desirable

  • Experience of influencing and providing support, advice and liaison with Stakeholders and Customers
