The mission of IBM's Artificial Intelligence Foundations lab is to pursue groundbreaking, fundamental research on artificial intelligence, with the goal of making the deployment of intelligent agents fast, inexpensive, and reliable. Towards that end, AI Foundations researchers study areas such as deep learning, generative modeling, semi-supervised learning, transfer learning, domain adaptation, reinforcement learning, learning to learn, optimization for AI, brain-inspired approaches to AI, interpretable AI, and learning with long-term memory. Commercialization of AI Foundations technologies will be done through IBM Watson business units.IBM is hiring postdoctoral researchers for a newly formed AI Foundations satellite lab located in Montreal. Researchers in this lab will pursue fundamental research in machine learning in collaboration with students, postdocs, and professors at the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) at the University of Montreal as well as with their colleagues in Yorktown Heights, New York. The collaborative work will be open, with an emphasis on publications in top-tier conferences and journals, use of open datasets to foster reproducible research, and, where appropriate, contributions to open-source software following IBM's open source participation guidelines. IBM researchers will also contribute to the commercialization of AI technologies. Successful candidates will have strong publication records and significant technical leadership abilities, with solid communication skills and ability to work in a team being essential.PhD graduates and those soon to be graduating, with strong publication records in machine learning are encouraged to apply. These postdoctoral researcher positions are suited for someone who would like to have some industrial research experience before making a decision on a longer term career in academia or industry, and are also good for people planning to make transition from related disciplines to machine learning. This position is a one year contract, working from the IBM Montreal office and the University of Montreal locations.
