IBM Linux/UNIX Systems Administrator III in DALLAS, Texas

IBM has a need for an experienced Linux/UNIX Systems Administrator III. This candidate would need to have a solid track record of completing assignments in a high volume, dynamic environment. This position is focused on the shared development and management of IBM's internal infrastructure of physical and virtual hosts. This is a great opportunity for technical growth and acquiring new skill sets. Troubleshooting and supporting many of IBM's products and tools is a strong aspect of this role, and will allow for innovative ideas to improve performance, issue mitigation, and workflow. The perfect candidate will have experience with many distributions of Linux/UNIX, as well as a wide variety of knowledge in multiple aspects of technology. This role requires the ability to adapt to change, continuously improving the services we offer as the premier hosting provider.Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all aspects of management, administration, and support of IBM's internal Linux/UNIX based infrastructure

  • Assist other departments in engineering highly scalable solutions for new and existing services

  • Participate in designing innovative solutions to improve current procedures

  • Manage multiple projects with various priority levels and time lines from start to finish

  • Act as escalation point for internal support departments in resolving a wide variety of customer facing issues regarding environment deployment, service issues, and technical questions

  • Consistently meet deadlines for complex issues and new projects involving multiple teams

  • Demonstrate best practices in all aspects of administration

  • Participate in weekly rotating on-call responsibilities, providing 24/7 coverage

  • Develop and maintain accurate documentation for internal procedures and services

  • Continuously stay abreast of new developments in supported operating systems to ensure consistent compatibility with established infrastructure


  • 5+ years of applicable experience with Linux/UNIX systems in a production environment

  • Understanding of basic network concepts, familiarity with TCP/IP and VLAN functionality

  • Strong understanding of the kernel and userland environments

  • Ability to automate solutions to repetitive problems/task


  • At least 5 years experience in maintenance of infrastructure and system operations

  • At least 5 years experience in Hypervisors, Networking, UNIX/Linux, Scripting, and/or programming

  • Internal support of Virtual Server Instances (VSI)

  • General troubleshooting of the Hypervisor and operating systems on them

  • Automated provisioning of operating systems

  • Template creation for supported operating systems

  • On-Call rotation

  • Internal tool development

  • Intermediate to advanced scripting skills

  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to details

  • Proven written and verbal communications skills
