IBM Software Engineer - Interactive Forecast for The Weather Company in ANDOVER, Massachusetts

The Weather Company, An IBM Business is seeking a Software Engineer to develop graphical applications used by meteorologists to create weather forecasts and value-added data products in several different markets. The applications follow a client-server model, with server software deployed in the cloud and client workstations residing in several forecast offices around the world.You will be part of the Interactive Forecast Systems team that designs, develops and supports the systems used by staff meteorologists to produce and augment weather forecasts. You will work closely with meteorologists to understand and refine applications requirements, with an eye on improving forecaster productivity. You will develop and extend graphical forecast applications, integrating input and output data into existing data streams as needed.

  • Extend existing framework code in C++ and C# to create forecasting tools to solve new problems, e.g. tropical cyclone tracking, radar editing, aviation surface weather

  • Add features that automate routine tasks or increase forecaster efficiency

  • Enable visualization and display of new data sets

  • Debug and troubleshoot application issues

  • Prepare, collaborate on, and review Software Engineering designs and implementations

  • Contribute to and review product requirements and QA test plans

  • Contribute to the body of documentation on existing and newly developed tools

  • At least 4 years of related experience in full cycle software development with demonstrated achievements and progressive responsibilities

  • Experience with graphical user interface programming

  • Experience with software development in an object oriented language (C++/C#/Java)

  • Familiarity with relational database concepts and SQL

  • Strong engineering background, ideally with high-performance, graphical applications

  • Some vertical feature development expertise – from kernel work up to the UI

  • Experience developing client-server software

  • Experience with multithreading and concurrency

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, agile development, build processes, testing, and operations

  • Appreciation for product design and human factors considerations in the development of graphical applications
